This body of work combines nature and art in order to create bio-inspired interactive textiles that promote health and wellbeing at home. Most of the pieces are inspired by the nest behaviour of the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) female bird, that refers to the bird’s capacity to effectively deal with the challenges Nature presents us with when constructing our environment, challenges such as dust, fungi, mould, bacteria and so on. Blue Tit female birds keep their nest free from biological contaminants by placing in their nest fresh fragments of plants (i.e., lavender [Lavandula stoechas], yarrow [Achillea ligustica], daisy [Helichrysum italicum], and apple mint [Mentha suaveolens]) known for their antimicrobial characteristics.
These pieces are among the physical outcomes of my practice-based PhD Bio-inspired Textiles: a poetic approach to raise awareness about air quality at home awarded in 2022 by UAL: Central Saint Martins, in London, United Kingdom.
